Many poisonous plants have very colorful histories.
For example, there’s a plant so toxic that its juice was administered to prisoners in ancient Greece as a means of swift execution. Interestingly, the United States imported this same plant by the tens of thousands of pounds prior to World War I for use in drug formulations.
There’s another plant that can cause convulsions and heart failure if ingested in sufficient quantities. This same plant contains a compound featured on the World Health Organization’s Model List Of Essential Medicines.
